The Motor Transportation Division (MTD) is a division of the Department of Public Safety. With complete statewide law enforcement jurisdiction, MTD enforces both federal safety regulations as well as state motor vehicle and criminal codes.

The MTD is the designated lead agency for motor carrier safety and size and weight enforcement in New Mexico. In addition to enforcing commercial motor vehicle laws and regulations, MTD is the first line of defense in New Mexico against threats to homeland security from individuals utilizing commercial motor vehicles as a means of terrorism.

 

Mission Statement - "To ensure the safe and legal operation of commercial motor vehicles."

 

This mission is accomplished by enforcing the State Criminal Code, Motor Transportation Act, Motor Vehicle Code and federal/state commercial motor vehicle safety regulations as adopted by the New Mexico Administrative Code. The division also conducts enhanced radiological inspections on all Waste Isolation Pilot Project (WIPP) shipments originating or entering the state, as well as, route control of hazardous material shipments.

 

The division performs a wide range of Regulatory and Enforcement activities statewide:

  • Safety Inspections:
    • Commercial Motor Vehicles and Drivers
    • Hazardous Materials Inspections
  • Traffic Enforcement
  • Accident Investigations
  • Compliance Reviews (safety audits) of Motor Carriers
  • Training of MTD & Motor Carrier Personnel
  • Drug Interdiction
  • Undercover Operations and Permit & Tax Compliance

Operates 14 Ports-Of-Entry located through out the state and has 3 additional locations that are operated on a temporary basis. Of the 14 Ports-of-Entry, five (5) are operated on a 24 hour / 7 day a week basis.
