Today's motoring public has the right to expect safe highways. Each day tens of thousands of commercial motor vehicles transport cargo ranging from household goods to hazardous materials coast-to-coast over New Mexico's Interstate system. Identifying unsafe vehicles and drivers of all types with the potential to cause serious crashes involving property damage, injuries, and death is important to overall safety.
The Motor Transportation Police Division (MTPD) is a division of the Department of Public Safety. With complete statewide law enforcement jurisdiction, MTPD enforces both federal safety regulations as well as state motor vehicle and criminal codes.
MTPD's goal is to ensure the safe, legal and compliant operation of commercial motor vehicles and to identify, remove and prevent unsafe conditions through inspections, enforcement and public education.
